Encouragement in the Storm
Daily Reading
Acts 27:13-38
Psalm 66:8-20
This week’s sermon text: James 4:1-12
Field Notes
In today’s reading, Paul is a prisoner of the Roman government and being transferred by ship to Rome, where he will stand trial. Apparently, it’s winter and not a favorable time for sailing, but the Roman centurion is determined to proceed in spite of Paul’s warning. Sure enough, a terrible storm blows in and threatens to swamp their ship and dash it upon the rocks.
In the midst of the turmoil, Paul stands up among the sailors and prisoners and encourages them. He tells them that he has seen an angel who told him not to be afraid and that he and all who are traveling with him will be safe. His words and example strengthen his shipmates.
Life gives us many opportunities to encourage others in a time of turmoil. Your faith in God can serve as an example to a friend or family member who is overwhelmed by anxiety or uncertainty. Today as you go about your activities, keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to share a faith-filled word of reassurance.

- Can you think of someone who needs encouragement right now? What tangible signs of faith could you share with him or her?
