Sharing in Suffering

October 4, 2018

DAILY READING

Job 2:11-13
This weekend’s reading: Genesis 25:21-34

FIELD NOTES

This is such a small part of Job’s story, but it may be my favorite.  Why?  Because to me, it gives one of the greatest examples of how to help share in someone else’s suffering.

Of course, they blow it almost immediately afterword when they open their mouth.

Sometimes all we can, or all we should do is just be with those who are suffering.  We don’t know all the answers, and shouldn’t try to give them.

I don’t remember the words anyone shared with me at my grandfather’s funeral.  I do remember who was there.

Why do we feel the need to always say something

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • How have people comforted you in times of trouble before?
  • How do you typically try to comfort those who are suffering?

PRAYER

Lord, may we be awake to what you are doing in and through our lives and the lives of those around us.  May we be given the strength to build each other up.  Amen.
