This Is Immanuel

DAILY READING

Matthew 9:32-34
This weekend’s reading: Genesis 37:1-11

FIELD NOTES

I love the line found in the NIV, where it says, “Nothing like this had ever been seen in Israel.”  Think about that.  Think about the history of Israel.  They’ve seen some stuff.  They’ve seen God deliver them time and again from the hands of their enemies.  They’ve seen God provide in miraculous ways.  But this was different.

Jesus is different.  The incarnation is different.  This is Immanuel.

Jesus changes everything the people thought about God.  The Pharisees couldn’t handle this.  He must be doing this through evil, they say.

I think I get it.  God, who while working in the lives of the people throughout history, has remained to them a distant force.  Now, God was here in Christ.  It had to be overwhelming.

I wonder, am I ever overwhelmed to the point of unbelief?

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • Do you find yourself overwhelmed by God?
  • In what ways?
  • How do you deal with it?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • What are some of the great things Jesus does in the Bible?

PRAYER

Lord, help us understand the scope of who you are.  Be with us when we are overwhelmed.  Be with us when we doubt.  In your name, Jesus.  Amen.
