The Courage to Folllow

December 4, 2018

DAILY READING

Revelation 22:12-16
This weekend’s reading: Malachi 3:1-4

FIELD NOTES

I wanted to include the entire scene here for context, but I wanted to focus on one line in the above text.  In 15, Jesus is listing those outside of his kingdom.  In this translation, we end with the phrase, “and all who love to live a lie.”

That got me.  That gave me pause.  Do I think I am living a lie?  No, not currently, but man, I have in the past.  My past doesn’t scare me so much as the thought that I could grow to love to live in a lie in the future.  I’ve done it before.  I can do it again.

And let’s say this—it’s easy to do.  We start down the wrong path, and before we know it, we are in a reality we don’t recognize anymore, and we don’t know which way is right.

May God set our path.  May we have the courage to follow.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • What lies do we tell ourselves?
  • Why do we believe lies over the truth so often?

PRAYER

Lord, may your truth speak louder in my ears than the world’s lies.  Help me to listen.  Amen.
