FIELD NOTES

Have you ever been ashamed of your Christian faith?

I remember in college, I was an active leader in our campus ministry.  I was known around campus as an active leader in this ministry.  I enjoyed being known this way.  I wasn’t ashamed.

One day in an abnormal psych class, the professor decided to go on a tear about campus ministry groups in general, and how he didn’t like them.  I really liked this professor.  I had found him to be one of the first professors I actually connected with.  To hear him talk about something that was such a big part of my life in a derogatory fashion crushed my soul.  More so, I felt like I had let him down.  I was ashamed.

It took me a few weeks to summon the courage to talk to him about this.  We never saw eye to eye on the issue.  I had to learn that my faith wasn’t something to be ashamed of.  I had that professor for three other classes.  I even grew bold enough to write about my faith in one class.

I wish I were more bold.  I wish I were as bold now as I was then.

Be bold in your faith.  Do not be ashamed.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • Have you ever been ashamed of your faith?  Why?  Why not?
  • Have you ever had to take a stand for your faith? What happened?

PRAYER

Lord, may we be bold in our convictions about you.  May we stand on your truth in the face of adversity.  Amen.
