DAILY READING

Luke 4:42-44
This weekend’s reading: Revelation 3:1-6

FIELD NOTES
Even Jesus needed rest. Throughout the New Testament, we read that Jesus often went away to a quiet or deserted place to pray. Here we see him doing just that, but the crowd follows. His work is never done. He tells them he was sent for the purpose of proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God to other cities as well, so he continues his traveling ministry.

If we are to be effective ministers of the gospel, we too need rest. We need sabbath and self-care and worship and fellowship. But we can’t stop there. If we are to participate in Christ’s mission, we must get up from our rest and spread the good news of the kingdom of God.

Follow Jesus’ example. Minister to the needs of the needy. Then find rest. Then do it all over again. Amen.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • How do you find rest when you are weary from your work?
  • Is your rest recharging your spirit to continue the work of Christ?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Talk about true rest. True rest restores us. False rest makes us lethargic and apathetic. Mindlessly scrolling through screens and social media might feel like you are recharging, but how is it feeding your spirit?

PRAYER
Holy One, forgive us when we forget to get up from our rest. Enable our weary minds and bodies to seek your restoration. Energize us for the exciting work of building your kingdom with you. Amen.
