FIELD NOTES

Deuteronomy 13 is a reminder of how easy it is to get our priorities out of order.  The people are being urged not to listen to false prophets or false gods, but to worship the one true God who has already done so much for them.  When we listen to the wrong voices or put our trust in the wrong things, we can easily forget that God is the one we can trust above all others because God has always been faithful to us, just as God was always faithful to the Israelites.  The author writes in verse four, “You must follow the Lord your God alone! Revere him! Follow his commandments! Obey his voice! Worship him! Cling to him—no other!” We too are called to put God first, to worship God alone, to follow God.  We must be intentional about keeping God in the center of our lives and not allowing other voices to lead us astray.

QUESTION FOR THE FIELD

  1. When have you listened to the wrong voices?  What were the consequences of that choice?
  2. How can you be intentional about keeping God in the center of your life?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  1. When have you been talked into something you thought was wrong?
  2. How could keeping God in the center of your life help you make better choices?
  3. How can you put God first this week?

PRAYER GUIDE

God, you are Holy.  You are our God.  Help us to keep you in the center of our lives and to listen to your voice.  Help us to make wise choices.  Amen.
