Not In A Hurry
April 1, 2020
Is anyone else experiencing time differently in this time of quarantining and social distancing? The busy schedules, constant checking of the calendar, and overall hustle that use to define my life has now be replaced with a haunting feeling of “wait, what day is this!?!”
This is the point of Sabbath. God commanded the newly free Israelites, for six days you shall work, but you will set aside the seventh as a day of rest (see Exodus 20:8-11). And I believe it’s not so much a day of rest so we have the energy to Go!Go!Go! the other six days, but the seventh day is a reminder that we are loved not for what we do, but for who we are, the beloved children of God. It’s easy to think that our value comes from what we can do or produce. But God wants us to know that our value comes from our connection to God, and so we must rest, slow down, be still.
PRAYER GUIDE
God, this global pandemic is forcing us to slow down. And we don’t like it. But even in the midst of this evil, may we begin to see and receive this grace of Sabbath. May we take this gift of time to turn our eyes to you. Amen.
