Impossible

DAILY READING

Psalm 114

FIELD NOTES

This psalm celebrates God’s wonders at the Exodus. It tells us that God is in the business of making impossible things possible: Splitting seas. Turning rocks into water. Releasing captives. Even raising people from the dead.

When a family member of mine turned away from her faith, it was hard to imagine her ever returning. She was so adamant that religion and spirituality did more harm than good in the world. She had a solid case with lots of evidence. It looked as though her restoration into the fold was impossible.

But nothing is impossible for God. God chased after her and found her. She is more deeply rooted and more spiritually mature than many lifelong Christians I know. Her time of desert wandering made her true conversion possible. Praise God for God’s works and wonders, too great for us to even comprehend.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • If you could write a psalm celebrating God’s wonders in today’s world of social distancing and sheltering in place, what would you write? What would you celebrate?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • What are some impossible things you wish were possible?

PRAYER GUIDE

God, due to this pandemic many previously possible things now feel impossible. But nothing is impossible for you. Open our eyes to see your wonders: The birds of the air and the flowers of the field are not worried. The rhythm of life continues. Help us join in the dance. Amen.
