FIELD NOTES
When I was young, I remember watching my childhood preacher give a sermon. I felt a stirring and quickly squashed it down, thinking, “Please God, anything but a preacher.”
In college I worked for a small rural church, and felt God calling me to ministry. I thought, “Please God, anything but seminary.”
In seminary I took a United Methodist polity course. I thought, “Please God, anything but ordination.”
When I relented and decided to pursue ordination, my thought was, “Please God, anything but service in the local church.”
I am now an ordained United Methodist elder serving the local church. Very happily so!
QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD
- What are you pleading or negotiating with God right now?
FAMILY FIELD TALK
- Even when we try to run from God or our calling, God pursues us with love and miraculous wonders. Talk about how God has brought your family together to this very moment.
PRAYER GUIDE
God, we thank you for your relentless pursual of us, even as we try to ignore you through our busyness and many distractions. The past few weeks have reminded us to wait and listen for you, then act according to your purpose. Let it be so. Amen.
