How Great Thou Art

June 20, 2020

DAILY READING

Psalm 98:1-6

FIELD NOTES

I first remember hearing “How Great Thou Art” on my grandparent’s enclosed back porch. It was the only space in the house large enough to hold Ma’s upright grand piano. My grandfather, Pa, sang in the choir, so on Sunday mornings after breakfast he would warm-up his voice with Ma accompanying him. I can close my eyes and see him at the right end of the piano and hear his deep bass (that 100-year-old piano is in my living room). He always sang this hymn before church…not the day’s anthem…but instead lifting his own praise to the God who he had followed his whole life.

To my mind there is only one way to end this week of faithfulness  encounters and that is to sing God’s praises as loudly and with as much gusto as we can! And because it is Nashville sing along with Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill! Listen here.

O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:

How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT CHALLENGE

For the duration of our sermon series, we are offering daily prompts for applying the wisdom from the scriptures to our everyday lives. Each week focuses on how we can encourage those around us and bear fruit! This week we are focusing on the fruit of faithfulness.

“That time
I thought I could not
go any closer to grief
without dying
I went closer,
and I did not die.
Surely God
had his hand in this,
as well as friends.” – Mary Oliver

Spend some time in prayer reflecting on how God has remained faithful to you. How does his faithfulness play out in your life? Through friends, family, his creation? Take a moment to thank him today.
