Signs of Love

DAILY READING

Genesis 24:1-27

FIELD NOTES

Have you ever prayed this kind of prayer? “Lord, if you want me to ________ (fill in the blank), then give me this sign _________(fill in the blank.)” When we’re confused or unsure, we sometimes ask God to give us a specific sign so we’ll know we’re on the right track.

Today’s reading tells of a similar prayer. Abraham’s servant had been tasked by his master to go to the “old country” and find a wife for Abraham’s son Isaac. So the servant, quite aware of the heavy responsibility he bore, set out to Haran. As he arrived at the city’s well, he prayed that God would show him a very specific sign – that the girl that offered to water his camels would be the right wife for Isaac. The servant said to God, “By this I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master.” Sure enough, the right girl offered to water the camels, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Abraham’s servant praised God for answering his prayer, and in that answer, he saw a sign of God’s steadfast love.
