The Upside Down Leadership of the Gospel

September 7, 2020

DAILY READING

Psalm 100

1 Peter 5:1-5

This week’s sermon text: James 3:1-12

FIELD NOTES

When most people think about the world’s great leaders, they imagine figures that can command people’s attention, that demand respect from others, that are brilliant orators, or that can bend other people’s will to their own, even if it means being ruthless.

But this is never the vision of leadership that the Gospel gives us. In the upside down leadership lessons of the Gospel, we learn that grace is more valuable than power. We learn that authority only comes with humility. We learn that we lead best when we fully submit to others and to Christ.

The Gospel always subverts what we thought we knew about the world. Let us learn to lead as Christ leads us.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • Who are you leading right now? What lessons of leadership from today’s scripture passage can you use in your own work and relationships?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • What does it mean to be humble? Why do you think the Bible says that this is a good thing?

PRAYER GUIDE

God, help us to lead others using your example. Remind us today that love is the most powerful leadership lesson Christ ever taught us. Amen.
