The Power to Heal an Outsider

DAILY READING

Mark 7:24-30

FIELD NOTES

“Even the dogs get the children’s scraps.” What a reply to Jesus.  Was Jesus testing her?  Was he being rude?  I doubt it on either question.  So what was he doing?  I don’t now.  What I do know, is that this woman’s faith, and her boldness, are incredible.  She’s an outsider.  A gentile.  And yet, she comes to Jesus with courage.  And Jesus heals her daughter.  Because of course he does. In her society, she had no right to approach Jesus, let alone push him in this way.  And Jesus loves her anyways.  Jesus doesn’t let the fact that she is an outsider keep her from being loved.  What an example on both parts.  Amen.
