The Power to Heal an Outsider

DAILY READING

Mark 7:24-30

FIELD NOTES

Memorial Day.  My son, who is black, is one year old.  We are staying at a condo in Gulf Shores.  We get in the pool.  As we’re swimming, and enjoying the pool, we hear two older women on the side of the pool making racist comments about our son.  We confront them and they leave.  We go back to our condo.  Later that afternoon, we see the condo maintenance team draining the pool so that we can’t use it again.  We were outsiders.  We were not wanted.  And they wanted us to know it.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • When have you seen people treated like outsiders in an effort to hurt them?  What did you do?
  • Have you ever made someone feel like an outsider in order to hurt them?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • How would you react in the story?

PRAYER GUIDE

Lord, may we never make people feel like outsiders, but instead treat them as the Imago Dei, and worthy of yours and our love.  Amen.
