FIELD NOTES

Some of you may be familiar with Nate Berkus, one of Oprah’s frequent guests and world class designer. Back during the Tsunami of 2004, Nate lost his partner during the tragedy. My friend and mentor, Cheryl was deeply saddened by this. She had watched him on TV over the years and couldn’t shake the thought of his broken heart. So she wrote him a letter. Just a simple letter expressing her sadness for him and his family. A few weeks later, she got a phone call. It was Oprah’s people. Nate was going to be on the show talking about what had happened and he wanted my friend Cheryl to be there. He wanted to meet her. He wanted to personally thank her for her kind words. He was so thankful for her letter that he personally paid for her to fly to Chicago, her hotel stay, and all of her meals while in town. He met with her backstage at the Oprah show and talked with her for what seemed like forever. They cried together. Nate knew he was loved.  So did Cheryl. They were both thankful.
