Are You Even There?

FIELD NOTES

I was sitting in the waiting room, outside the step-down ICU unit at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St Louis. My dad, having just had a liver transplant, was struggling. Something was wrong, but the doctors didn’t know what it was. Mere hours after his transplant, the doctors decided to take him off of all pain medicine in hopes to find the cause of his problems. I remember as clear as day watching him strapped to the bed, wailing in pain.

“God are you even there?” I pleaded.
