But God

Psalm 22:23-26

When I first sat down to write something about “hope in Christ,” I’ll be completely honest, there wasn’t a story or antidote that immediately came to my mind. My faith in Christ has always been secure, but I continued to get hung up on the word “hope”. I think perhaps this is circumstantial to this particular season that we all are in. I don’t know about you, but this past year (2020) has been a year unlike any other. More than any other year in my life, the concept or feeling of hope has felt fleeting. In the face of so many unknowns (I’m a person who likes to know what’s going to happen), I felt like hope was momentarily out of my grasp.

One of my favorite sayings is “but God…” because it encompasses all of our human failings:

I couldn’t see a way out…but God…
I couldn’t overcome this addiction…but God…
I was drowning in my loneliness…but God…
I may feel hopeless…but God…

We all may have times in our life when we feel like we cannot hope. However, we can acknowledge God’s strength when we are weak. We can acknowledge God’s power when we feel powerless. I can’t say that I have fully found the hope that I would like to tie up neatly with a bow and share with you today. The thing about faith is that I know it’s there and accessible to me, and it is accessible to you. As the psalmist says, God does not hide his face from us, but listens to us when we cry for help. When we humbly seek the Lord, we will eat and be satisfied. We may not be able to find the words to communicate our hope, but in time, God will show us. As we move through the days of Lent—slowly drifting from winter to spring, from a long pandemic year to a way forward—hope feels within our grasp. Always there, waiting for us.
