DAILY READING

Psalm 119:9-16; Isaiah 44:1-8; Acts 2:14-24

FIELD NOTES

Shhh.  Pause.  Wait.  Quietly.

Are you listening?

Did you notice the first three words of Isaiah 44:1: “But now, listen”.

In Acts, the instruction is repeated twice, first in verse 14 (“listen carefully”), and again a few verses later in 22 (“listen to this”).

Our technologically savvy, sophisticated, high-powered, high stakes, multi-tasking 21st century is more like:  Now! Hurry! Interrupt! Cell Phone! Drive fast! Work! Eat! Social Media! Go! Go!

Scripture dares us to do the opposite.  Just listen.

Did you hear that?  If not, keep listening. Close your eyes, and listen.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • Do you interrupt others when they are speaking, or do you listen actively?
  • Do you do the same thing when God is speaking to your heart?
  • When you listen, are you thinking about what you are going to say next, or are you engaged in what is being said?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • What does it mean to be a good listener?

PRAYER GUIDE

Lord, slow my words, and open my ears.  Teach me how to listen.  Speak to my heart, and show me your ways.  Amen.
