Alive to God

DAILY READING

Romans 6:1-11

FIELD NOTES

I don’t know what you woke up worrying about today. I don’t know what is breaking your heart. I don’t know what pain your body is in. I don’t know who you miss or what you long for. I don’t know what scares you or makes you feel lonely. I don’t know. But I hope you will gather all of it up and read this passage again.

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

And now, today, remember that on Good Friday, all was lost and broken. Darkness and anxiety and fear moved in…but not to stay. Because on Sunday, life conquered death and light defeated darkness.  And joy and freedom and love were made new and real in the resurrection of our redeeming Lord.

And remember that the worst thing will never be the last thing!

PRAYER GUIDE

God, I give you thanks for your grace. For your presence in all things. Would you move into the worst things I’m facing right now? Move in and fill me with peace and hope. Move in and remind me that you’re closer to me than the air I breathe – even when it’s hard for me to catch my breath. Amen.
