Joy in Searching

April 29, 2021

DAILY READING

1 Peter 1:8b-12

[Psalm 116:1-4]

FIELD NOTES

Here in 1 Peter, we see that even the angels are seeking a deep relationship with God.  We seek and seek, and sometimes we seem to find ourselves where we want to be.  Often times, we fall short, due to a myriad of circumstances.  The writer speaks of having an inexpressible joy in the searching.  Pete Greig, founder of the 24/7 Prayer Movement, says in his book, Dirty Glory

“Our Father in Heaven longs for us to seek out his presence in the Holy of Holies without an agenda.  Not out of duty.  Not because we have favours to ask or things to get off our chests.  He wants us to seek him out simply because we are happier in his presence than anywhere else.”

May that be true.  May our joy be in the presence of God, rather than in any other thing that may steal it away from the God who created us and longs to be with us.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • Do we truly find happiness in God?  Why or why not?
  • Are we still searching for a deeper relationship with God, or have we grown content, deciding to stay put in our current state?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Discuss a time you searched for something and the joy you had in finding it. How can this be like our relationship with God?

PRAYER GUIDE

God, we pray today for that joy we find in the searching.  May we seek you out with everything inside us, and will you please fill us with the renewed joy of our salvation.  Amen and amen.
