A Formula for Faith

June 1, 2021

DAILY READING

Psalm 100

Hebrews 13:20-21

This week’s sermon text: James 3:1-12

FIELD NOTES

Today’s scripture passage is a benediction, a closing statement of God’s grace for believers. But in this powerful closing statement of Hebrews, we also receive a succinct formula for God’s salvation of all people.

The formula starts with the acknowledgement of God’s peace-filled intention towards us, and the statement that God brought us this peace by raising Christ from the dead. The fact that Christ would die is recognition of God’s “eternal covenant” with all of creation.

When someone receives this news—that God loves them and sent his Son—a process begins: we call it sanctification. Today’s scripture phrases it as being “complete in everything good.” The effect of being completed in everything good is that we come closer and closer to God’s will.

And what is God’s will? It’s not some secret or hidden message that only a few people know. God’s will is that you would do the things God values amongst God’s people. God values love, so we must love others. God values peace, so must make peace. Think about what God values, do those things, and you are accomplishing God’s will for your life.

Finally, we see what results from all of this—God receives glory and praise. And what we know is that when our praise is focused on God, our lives find their greatest fulfillment.
