Do Not Judge

June 30, 2021

DAILY READING

Luke 6:43-45

FIELD NOTES

According to the Wesley Study Bible, “The prohibition against passing judgement is not based upon the inadequacy of human knowledge. In fact, we often can recognize sins in other people (“each tree is known by its own fruit,” v. 44). We are forbidden to judge others because we concentrate upon inspecting our own lives (v. 42) and because unforgiving words are spoken from a heart that abounds with evil (v.45; see Sermon 49: “The Cure of Evil-Speaking”).

We are known by the fruit we produce. They should know we are Christians by our love, not by our judgement.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • Re-read Luke 6. Examine the fruit of your life. Are there more figs or more thorns?
  • What is one thing you could change about your habits to produce more fruit for God’s kingdom?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • As a family, talk about the process of how you perceive others, and how others perceive you.

PRAYER GUIDE

Holy God, thank you for teaching us to withhold our own judgement of others in favor of examining ourselves. In this way we are becoming more like you every day!
