True Friendship

July 3, 2021

DAILY READING

1 Samuel 18:1-4

FIELD NOTES

“David and Jonathan provide us with perhaps the most intriguing story of friendship in the Bible. Theirs is a relationship of loyalty, trust, and support. Every time we read this story it leads us to the question: What kind of friend am I? A true friend is one who, during our darkest hours, offers hope, encouragement, and support. Our emotional stability is predicated on whether or not we have someone who is willing to stand with us and sometimes behind us to push us over the hump of despair. That’s the kind of friend we all ought to strive to be.” – Wesley Study Bible

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • Not all friendships are like that of David and Jonathan, and that’s okay. But do you have anyone in your life for whom you would risk it all, even your own birthright? Do you have a friend whom you think would risk it all for you? Ponder what kind of friend you are this week.

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • What are the qualities of a good friend?
  • Do you see people in school, at church, or somewhere else that have no friend? How can you be their friend in their time of need?

PRAYER GUIDE

Oh God, you are our constant companion. Help us to be good friends to our neighbors in need. Amen.
