Plundering Egyptians

DAILY READING

Exodus 12:29-42

FIELD NOTES

How many times have you read the story of the Exodus?  How many times have you heard it taught in Sunday School, or worship?  I have read this story multiple times, and seen just about every movie made about it, and yet, in reading it this time, something new sticks out to me.  Look at verse 36.  It says the Israelites plundered the Egyptians.  Maybe I’m just dense, but out of all the times I’ve gone through this story, I don’t ever remember reading that.

It makes me wonder; how closely do I read God’s Word?  How intentionally do I study?  Am I diving in, and pouring over the text, or am I simply skimming to get through it and move on to the next thing?  Even worse; am I just skimming so that I can draw my own conclusions rather than let the truth of the text reveal itself?

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • How do you read the Bible?
  • What steps can you take to read it more closely?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • What’s your favorite Bible story and why?

PRAYER GUIDE

God, we come to you and ask that your Word would reign in our hearts.  We pray for open minds, and dedicated hearts to seek out your truth.  Guard us from our own conclusions. Guard us from proof-texting.  Guard us from bad interpretation.  We pray this in your name. Amen.
