God’s Power

DAILY READING

Psalm 8

FIELD NOTES

This psalm of celebration reminds us of God’s ultimate power and authority over all Creation. And yet as I read through the verses, I am reminded yet again of God’s propensity to flip power on its head. “Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes.” Here we see the cries of the weak motivating God to silence the enemy! The Psalmist asks, “What are human beings that you are mindful of them?” In comparison to the vastness of Creation, we are so insignificant. Yet God has empowered us to care for and maintain the whole Creation. God’s power is so unlike ours: whereas we grasp for more, God is always giving it away!

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • How are you fulfilling your call to care for Creation?
  • How are you using your power and privilege to give voice to the weak?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • As a family, talk about some seemingly insignificant aspects of your life together that you might have taken for granted (running water, electricity, shoes…) How can we be more mindful of the ways God is at work in our lives?

PRAYER GUIDE

Holy God, thank you for trusting us with your Creation. Please grow within us a heart to care for it gently and faithfully. Help us to use our power for the good of all, not just ourselves. Amen.
