For Whom Do We Boast?

It’s important to note that, over the course of the Corinthian correspondence, Paul claims to boast in and of only two things: the cross of Christ and the Corinthian believers.
In 1st Corinthians, Paul reminds the Corinthians that he could boast of much: his lineage, his education, his sacrifice, and his knowledge of faith. And yet, all of these are paltry compared to the surpassing wisdom of the cross.
In these verses from 2nd Corinthians, Paul returns to this theme, but this time, he tells the Corinthians that he boasts about them to others. This might seem strange, because the Corinthians have, in a way, been a thorn in Paul’s side. They have quarreled with each other and often given into the pagan culture around them.
But Paul knows that they are trying. They are striving for holiness—imperfectly, but still striving. Let us give thanks today for all those that are trying to follow Christ, no matter how imperfectly. Because we remember that we are imperfect followers as well. Through the cross of Christ, may we all be made more perfect in love.
