Rest in the Lord

DAILY READING

Psalm 4

FIELD NOTES

When I am feeling overwhelmed or upset, the weight of things always seems to be heaviest at night. Perhaps because the world is silent and I can’t distract myself. Or perhaps it is because this is the time when I am able to be the most honest with myself and with God. In these moments, I often struggle with what to say to God when I pray. However, Psalm 4 reminds me that I don’t need to say anything:

Tremble and do not sin;
when you are on your beds,
search your hearts and be silent.
Offer the sacrifices of the righteous
    and trust in the Lord.

Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?”
Let the light of your face shine on us.
Fill my heart with joy
when their grain and new wine abound.

In peace I will lie down and sleep,
    for you alone, Lord,
    make me dwell in safety.

So rest in God’s presence, and remember that the Lord hears us when we call to Him (v.3), even when we have no words.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • When do you need silence with God? Set aside time each day to be in silence with the Lord.

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Do you ever feel like you need to talk to God and you don’t know what to say? Know that God always hears you when you are calling to Him, even when we don’t know what words to use.

PRAYER GUIDE

God, please help me to be silent. Remind me that you do not need my words, only my open heart to speak with You. Amen.
