Preparing the way

DAILY READING

Luke 21:34-38

FIELD NOTES

This passage in Luke comes as a command after Jesus tells a parable about trees.  He says, “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near.  So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.”  Have you ever had to prepare for a big event?  Maybe it is a lot of family coming over for Christmas dinner or you had to plan a conference for work.  Maybe you play sports or run and prepared for the big game or race.  No matter what the big event is, there is always lots of preparation so you are ready when it arrives.  You work out, you run drills, you plan a menu, go shopping, and cook…. You must be intentional about your work so that the final dinner, event, game, or race is successful. Jesus commends us to do the same for the kingdom of God.  Each day we must intentionally live our lives as disciples of Christ so that we can ultimately glorify Him.

PRAYER GUIDE

God, just as we spend time and energy preparing for the big events in life, help us to live a life that prepares our hearts for you.  Continue to teach us what that means and empower us to live out what we learn.  Amen.
