Steps of Faith

DAILY READING

Hebrews 11

FIELD NOTES

In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana Jones has to find the Holy Grail so that his dying father can drink from the cup and receive healing. At the movie’s climax, to find the grail, Indiana Jones has to go to the place of the lion’s head image and take a step of faith off a narrow cliff into what appears to be a dark bottomless chasm. When he takes that step of faith, his foot lands on an invisible path that he sees only after his foot lands. Following the path, he finds the Holy Grail, and his father receives healing.

Jesus Christ is the “Lion of Judah” (Rev. 5:5) and the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29 and Genesis 22:13). When I take steps of faith without Christ’s guidance, I fall. When I take steps of faith with Christ’s guidance, I can cross chasms.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • When is a time you took a step of faith? How scary was it? What did it feel like to succeed?
  • Is there a time when you should have taken a step of faith but didn’t? What does it feel like now?
  • Is God calling you to take a step of faith right now?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Discuss how faith in God is like trusting parents. Discuss how it is not.
  • Share stories of how each of you has taken steps of faith. How did it feel?
  • Are there times any of you wish you took a step of faith but didn’t?
