Our Church-Wide Fast

DAILY READING

2 Chronicles 20:1-23

FIELD NOTES

Did you notice in today’s passage in 2 Chronicles that Jehoshaphat, the ruler of the Jews in Judah, called a nation-wide fast as a means for the Jews to prepare their hearts to hear from God?  Fasting was and is a spiritual practice that is meant to draw us closer to God.  As we physically hunger, we are called to hunger for God.  Our physical hunger is a literal reminder to stop and pray and listen for God.

Each year during Lent, Christians engage in spiritual practices, fasts, increased prayer, etc., in an effort to draw closer to God. While these are not required of us, they do help us on our spiritual journey. This year, what practices will you adopt to help you grow nearer to God?

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • What fast challenges will you commit to during Lent?
  • How have these practices deepened your faith and commitment to serve others as a Christian?
  • If you have fasted, what has been challenging about fasting?  What has been fruitful?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • What can you do during Lent to help you grow nearer to God?

PRAYER GUIDE

Lord bless our efforts to grow closer to you. As we feel hungry, or tired, help us to remember to stop and pray, listening for your guidance in our lives.  Amen.
