Trust in God as Protector

DAILY READING

Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16

FIELD NOTES

Today’s Psalm focuses on God’s protection in the midst of danger. We are never guaranteed a world free from the threat of danger and violence, but we know that we can turn to our Lord whenever we face danger. No matter the dangers we face, or the intense fears that might afflict us, our faith in God as protector will always carry us through…no matter the outcome.

I will never forget when I was in college at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and heading home from a fraternity event. It was a beautiful afternoon but all of the sudden the skies grew dark and the air felt very heavy. We could hear alarms going off both outside the vehicle as well as on the radio. A tornado was spotted not far from where we were on the highway! Those of us in the car did not know if we should pull over and lie in a ditch (there were no towns or buildings near us) or keep driving through the storm. One of us just muttered “Dear Lord please protect us from this.” Shortly after discussing what we should do, the storm let up and blew right over us. There was a calmness and light from the clouds that I will never forget. We may have been in a dangerous situation, but our intuition was to first seek God’s protection prior to assessing our alternatives.

By entrusting ourselves to God’s protection we will be kept safe. For if we make the Lord our refuge, as v. 14-15 explains, “…I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble.” How blessed we are to have this assurance from our gracious and loving God!

  • When was the last time you were in danger, felt afraid, or were overwhelmed? Did you remember to ask God for help?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • When you are scared, did you know that you can talk to God? God will always protect and watch over us, no matter what!

PRAYER GUIDE

Dear Lord, help me to turn to You in all circumstances. Help me not to rely on my own strength or understanding when I am in danger or feel afraid, but to turn to You. And help me to remember that You are my source of strength and comfort. Amen.
