Prayer

DAILY READING

Luke 13:31-35

Brentwood United Methodist Church is my spiritual home. It was here that I sang the songs of childhood and learned the classic Bible stories.

This youth group is where I fell in love with Jesus and where I discovered my call to ministry.

The pews in this Sanctuary were where Wesley’s hymns and our theology of grace was baked into my bones.

This is my spiritual home. You have one, too. Yours might also be BUMC. Yours might be the church that raised you or the woods or the beach or in the company of a friend. Your spiritual home is the place you work out the questions of your faith, where you grow in love of self and love of neighbor, where you find yourself grounded in relationship to Christ.

James Burns points out that Jerusalem was Jesus’ spiritual home. And while the journey was indirect, he was clear in his mission to get there regardless of obstacles and threats. You, too, are on a journey.

ACTION FOR THE DAY

Prayer can be a very physical experience. And can sometimes be made richer by our surroundings. If you are unable to get to your spiritual home, spend some time today in a place where you feel close to God, and closer to who you are. Just be present and receive the comfort and security God has for you there.
