A Little Faith

DAILY READING

1 Samuel 17:19-32

At this year’s Harvest Hands Advocates Breakfast, Rev. Brian Hicks talked about the gentrification of south Nashville. I was struck by his non-traditional way of accepting this change. Most non-profit directors would have said, “What a shame,” and began looking for ministry opportunities elsewhere. But Brian took what could have been seen as the end of community development in that area, and instead envisioned a chance for creative entrepreneurship. “What if we seek to connect with these new neighbors as partners?” he asked. “What if instead of lamenting their existence we ask them to pay six bucks for a cup of coffee to support our students?” And now Humphreys Street is exemplified as a successful ministry model. The proof is in the coffee.

The threatening cry of Goliath reached the ears of the Israelites and David alike. But David heard it differently. He heard it with ears of faith, not ears of fear. David had faith that God’s will would be done through him, just as Brian Hicks has faith that God’s will will be done in south Nashville. It just takes a little faith. Faith the size of a mustard seed. Or river rock, as it were.

Holy God, give us faith to see the world through your eyes. Let us see neighbors wherever we go. Let us not heed the threat of Goliath. Let us instead hear and heed your invitation to trust. Amen.
