Loving Giving

May 18, 2022

DAILY READING

Leviticus 19:9-10 (CEV)
John Wesley reminded us to “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long you can.” Mother Teresa said, “It’s not how much we give, but the love we put into giving.”

God commanded the Hebrews to care for the needy and lonely, as examples to others. Thousands of years and generations of Hebrews later, Jesus – God’s Son – gave the same commandment in Matthew 22:37-39 (NIV) when He said: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”

FAMILY FIELD TALK

There is an old Mohawk Indian proverb that says, “Life is both giving and receiving.” What does this mean to you? Perhaps today in some quiet time you and your family can think about what it feels like to do all you can for others and to love what you are doing. Are you receiving more than you are giving? The Lord Jesus Himself said: It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

PRAYER GUIDE

Dear Gracious Lord, help us to love giving. Amen.
