For the One Who Has Everything

DAILY READING

Revelation 3:14-22
This weekend’s reading: Revelation 3:14-22

FIELD NOTES
Because of its location on a trade route, Laodicea developed a great financial base.  When an earthquake destroyed the city in 61 AD, the Laodiceans told Rome, “We don’t need your help to rebuild.  We can rebuild everything ourselves.”  And they did.

Thus, John quotes the Laodiceans as saying, “I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.”  When in reality, John adds that they were just the opposite: “wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.”

I had a former church member who said, “All is going great!  I don’t need God’s help right now.”

It still amazes me how we all, including me, tend to rely upon our own strength without God’s guidance and help.

Yet, Jesus continues to stand at the door of our hearts knocking, willing to come into our lives and give us all the blessings we need.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • What parts of your life are you trying to live on your own, as if God cannot help?
  • What parts of your life would you like to ask for God’s help?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Have each person in your family list ways that they help the others in the family.
  • Have each person in your family list ways you want help from the others in the family.
  • Share how your family is stronger because of what each person does to help others.

PRAYER
Most loving gracious Lord, I know I need to center my life in you.  Yet, it is so easy for me to try to do things on my own without you.  Lord, again I ask that you help me center my life in you such that I rely upon your guidance and help, even when I do not think I need it.  In your gracious name, I pray.  Amen.
