Lighting the way

DAILY READING

Psalm 147:12-20

FIELD NOTES

I lived in Albuquerque, NM, when I was a child and one of my favorite things about the month of December was that you could see luminaria everywhere. Luminaria are paper bags filled with sand, with a lit candle placed inside, making a lantern that glows in the night. They are set up on the roofs of churches and buildings throughout the city and along the sidewalks and driveways of homes throughout the neighborhoods. Many people decorate with luminaria out of tradition, but people believe the original meaning behind setting out these lanterns was to light the way to the inn for Mary and Joseph or light the way for the Christ child. I was not raised in the church, but as a child I loved seeing the lanterns and setting them up at our home. It made me feel that Christ was close to me, that He could be part of my life.

Many neighborhoods in Brentwood have also adopted this tradition and this year Brentwood Luminaries takes place tonight! I invite you to drive or walk around the neighborhoods in Brentwood tonight. As you do, say a prayer and invite Christ into your life and into your home.
