FIELD NOTES

This time of year, I am always reminded that sometimes words get in the way of listening. Sometimes we focus so much on what is being said that we miss why it is being said, the deep meaning behind the words. 

When I was young, the Christmas Eve service at our church always concluded with the congregation turning out the lights in the sanctuary, the pastor lighting a candle from the alter, and one-by-one each person present would silently pass the light of Christ until the sanctuary was illuminated by candle light. Once all the candles were lit, the congregation sang Stille Nacht, Silent Night in German. I love the words of Silent Night, but sometimes I focus too much on the words and miss the meaning behind the words. But in these moments, singing in German, I could focus on the stillness of the night and the beautiful gift of Christ.
