FIELD NOTES

William Barclay writes regarding these verses in Matthew,

“Riches have three main effects on a [person’s] outlook:

  1. Riches encourage a false independence.
  2. Riches shackle a [person] to this earth.
  3. Riches tend to make a [person] selfish.

… It is not that riches are a sin – but they are a danger. The basis of all Christianity is an imperious sense of need.”

Barclay goes on to say that when we have many things on earth, we are in danger of thinking we don’t need God. But when we have very little, we are brought closer to God because we often have nowhere else to go. Let us remember that all our blessings belong to God, without whom we would have nothing.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • Have you ever felt more tied to your wealth or belongings than to Christ?
  • How do we stay faithful to Christ in the midst of financial security without idolizing money?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Name an object (like a favorite toy or accessory) that’s important to you. Can you take it with you to heaven? What can you take with you?

PRAYER GUIDE

God, when our needs are met and we live in abundance, we sometimes forget to thank you and to share with others. When we have nothing, we realize how much we need you and rely on others. Remind us in both the lean and full seasons that you continually bless us with true wealth; with faith, hope, and love. Amen.
