FIELD NOTES

In Stephen’s speech, we see in our text him invoking Moses’ encounter with the burning bush.  It includes God’s command to Moses to take off his sandals because he was standing on Holy Ground.  Have you ever wondered: what exactly is holy ground?

Some say it could be places of significance to religious history.  Others might say places like Gettysburg, or other battlefields might be holy ground due to the sacrifice of so many who died there. 

Others still might say it’s only the church and its property.  Or maybe even just the sanctuary. 

I wonder though—are we looking at the idea of Holy Ground with too small a lens?  Could it be the schools?  Could it be the statehouse?  Could it be the bridge where the most vulnerable take shelter?  Could it be our homes? 

What if we viewed every place as Holy Ground because we believe God is in and through everything?  How would we interact with the world?

• Are there places in your life that feel more holy than others?  Why do you think that is the case?
  
• What would you do differently if you looked at every place you visited as Holy Ground?
