Living Into Your Potential

August 11, 2018

DAILY READING

Genesis 1:26-31
Psalm 8
This weekend’s reading: Genesis 1:26-31

FIELD NOTES

Several years ago, a child with a handicapping condition learned from God through his church that God had not stopped creating him.  Inspired by this, he created a choir of children with handicapping conditions.  When it came time for him to sing a solo, he struggled to the mic while everyone waited, holding their breath.

He began singing, “I am a Promise.  I am a Possibility.  I am a Promise with a capital P. I am a great big bundle of potentiality.”

What he sang is true for every one of us at every age.  While Mozart began performing at five years of age, Colonel Sanders did not open his first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise until he was sixty-two years old. In our recent trip to Uganda, one girl was fourteen years old and another lady was eighty-two years old.

God created us with lives of possibilities of what we can do for our own growth for God’s creation.  In fact, Psalm 8:6 teaches that God gave us dominion over all things.  Dominion means that we are care-takers and managers with God, thus we are co-creators with God.  Created in God’s image, we have the promise of great potential and we can grow into those possibilities.

What about today?

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • What are some specific accomplishments in your life?  (School, Family, Work, Talent?)
  • What are some possibilities that you dream about accomplishing?
  • What might you attempt if you knew you could not fail and that God stood with you?
  • When do you plan to start?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • What accomplishments have we done as a family?
  • What are some things we dream about doing as a family?
  • What are some things we dream about doing individually?
  • With God’s help, what are our next steps in making the possibilities reality?
  • When do you plan to start?
  • As a family how can we help each other?

PRAYER

Most loving gracious, Lord, you saw great possibilities when you created us.  Please help us live into what you had in mind when you first thought of us.  Help us to trust you and help others live into their possibilities as well. In your gracious name, I pray.  Amen.
