There Is Something About Mary

December 12, 2018

Luke 1:26-45
This weekend’s reading: Zephaniah 3:14-20

FIELD NOTES
In Reflections for Advent and Christmas: Waiting in Joyful Hope 2009-2010 Robert Morneau writes
“One senses a close; intimate relationship between Mary and Elizabeth…one element is common vision.  Mary and Elizabeth were both women of faith. God’s presence in their lives was not some abstract force but a personal, providential love that transformed their minds and hearts.  In other words, they were believers. What God said to them would be done.  [As] Elizabeth exclaims: “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” [Luke 1:45]

So what is it about Mary?  Why has she been elevated, sought, revered, adored?  … [She] brings into Christian experience much beauty –providing a door which can attractively and gently lead us to contemplate the mystery of love and suffering, and finally to bring us to the love Christ himself.  [Portrait of a Woman: Meditations on the Mother of our Lord, Herbert O’Driscoll]
