Created to Be Like God

January 7, 2019

DAILY READING

Ephesians 4:17-5:1
This weekend’s reading: Revelation 2:1-7

FIELD NOTES

“Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.”

Here we are in the early days of the new year.  We make goals, resolutions, plans, to be better.  We want to lose weight.  We want to read our Bible from beginning to end.  We want to quit smoking.  We want that big promotion at work.  We want.  We want.  We want.

What if instead of working towards what we want, we began working towards being who we truly are—children of the Most High God?

What would that look like?  What would it mean to live into the nature of Christ in your daily life?

I think about my own world, and how I struggle with the balancing act of trying to be who I am supposed to be, and whom I think the people in my life want me to be.  Do I speak up about the right things?  Do I work for the right goals?

We all fight this fight—being who we are versus who we think people want us to be.  And yet, God says, “Be like me.”  Love unconditionally.  Serve all.  Forgive those who wronged you without exception because we have been forgiven without exception.  Give to the poor.  The very characteristics of Christ should be characteristics of our own selves.

Maybe if we focused on being like Christ, the fight of being who we truly are and whom the world wants us to be wouldn’t be so hard.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • Who do you think you are?
  • Who does God say you are?
PRAYER

Lord, may we allow your nature to invade our own so that we may be like you. We pray this simple prayer with the power of Jesus. Amen.
