Are You Enthusiastic About the Law?

September 25, 2017

DAILY READING
Psalm 119:97-104
This week’s sermon text: Romans 7:14-25

FIELD NOTES

Do you follow the rules? Or do you often think, ‘the rules don’t apply to me’? Or what about the mantra, “It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission”? Personally, I’m a rule follower; I find that rules are there to keep order. Our psalmist writer seems especially enthusiastic for the law and rules! “Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all day long” – Psalm 119:97

If we read all of Psalm 119, our writer indicates that adhering to God’s rules creates a path for blessings. I don’t believe it’s saying that following God’s rules and laws will generate an easy life, but will offer a life of joy and honor. Meditating on God’s word and wrestling with the text will generate wisdom in your life. If you are like me, you often struggle to find a dedicated space in your day for reading scripture – how can you reflect on God’s word and be reminded of the wisdom that it offers throughout your day?

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • What does it mean to meditate on God’s word?
  • Are you in the midst of a difficult situation where scripture might be able to offer you wisdom?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Where in life do you experience rules? (i.e. household rules, rules in the classroom, etc.)
  • Do you find it easy or hard to follow the rules?

Prayer Guide

Lord, help me to meditate on your word and allow scripture to influence my decisions and attitude throughout today. May your word be a lamp unto my feet and a light for my path. Amen.
