Human Wisdom

September 20, 2018

DAILY READING

Psalm 1
1 Corinthians 2:1-5
This weekend’s reading: Genesis 18:1-15

FIELD NOTES

In this passage from 1st Corinthians, Paul makes a helpful distinction for us: the difference between faith based on human reason and faith based on the power of God.

John Wesley affirmed that reason was an important element in a person’s faith development, but he also taught that human wisdom could not, in fact, save us. This saving power was reserved for the power of God in raising Jesus from the dead. When we have faith in this power, we are saved.

We should make good use of the human wisdom that comes to us in so many forms these days, but this is not where we are to put our faith. Let us trust fully in the power of God for our lives and our mission in the world.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • What human sources of wisdom have you prioritized over God’s power?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Why do you think learning is a gift from God?
  • How can our school learning help us in our faith learning?

PRAYER

Almighty God, we admit we don’t have all the answers. Give us faith to trust in you even in the midst of our greatest doubts. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
