Being Invisible

April 12, 2019

DAILY READING

Psalm 31:9-16
This weekend’s reading: Luke 23:32-43

FIELD NOTES

I’m struck today by verses 11-12: “I’m a joke to all my enemies, still worse to my neighbors. I scare my friends, and whoever sees me in the street runs away! I am forgotten, like I’m dead, completely out of mind; I am like a piece of pottery, destroyed.” The psalmist is obviously at odds with his community. Even his friends and neighbors have turned away from him. Thus, he feels invisible, forgotten, and useless.

Jesus tells us he came to seek and save the least and the lost. The psalmist does not and will not go unnoticed by Christ. Neither should we overlook those in our community who are hurting and feeling invisible. We are called to go to those on the margins, just as Christ did and continues to do. No one should feel like a joke to their neighbors. We should never run away from a neighbor in need.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • Who have you been running from? Ask Christ to go with you as you run toward them instead.

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Tonight at dinner, discuss what it’s like to feel forgotten. How can we start to see all the people, not just our friends?

PRAYER GUIDE

God, open our eyes to see those who have become invisible to us. Ignite us with a passion for the least and the lost. Equip us as your disciples to relentlessly pursue those the world has forgotten. Amen.
