FIELD NOTES
In Genesis 12, God calls a man named Abram. He instructs him to pack up his family and everything he owns, to leave the only home he’s ever known, and to go to the land God will show him. God calls Abram, and Abram listens and follows.
God promises to be with Abram on every step of the journey, and God is faithful to that promise. God promises to make a great nation out of Abram’s descendants, and as we discover later in Genesis, God is faithful to that promise as well.
Like Abram, God calls each of us to unique and specific tasks. These tasks could be as every day as a conversation with a person who is hurting and needs a listening ear and a word of encouragement, and these tasks could be the way we earn a living or whom we choose to build a family with or the places we serve others. Whenever I think about God’s call, I always hear the chorus of a hymn we sang a lot when I was young: “Here I Am Lord.”
“Here I am Lord! Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.”
God is calling each of us to something, and God promises to be with us. And because God is faithful to Abram, we know God will be faithful to us and we can say with confidence, “I will go Lord if you lead me and hold your people in my heart.”

PRAYER GUIDE
Faithful God, thank you for the many ways that you call us. Help us to hear your voice, to be open to your call, and to go where you send us. Amen.
