Begging

DAILY READING

Mark 5:1-20

FIELD NOTES

Have you ever begged God?  This man, whom Jesus had just healed, wanted to follow Jesus.  He begged him.  And yet God had other plans?

Not quite a year ago, I got a phone call, telling me that my grandmother had been hospitalized and it wasn’t looking good.  She was in Florida, 14 hours away.  I tried calling her but she was unable to talk on the phone.  My wife and I planned a hasty trip to Florida to see her before something worse happened.  During all this, I remember praying out of desperation for just one more opportunity to talk to her.  I sent a video of her great-grandson saying “Hey Grammy, Love you!  Feel better!”  My aunt told me she smiled as she watched it, even thought she couldn’t talk anymore.

As we were preparing to leave and drive through the night, my phone rang again.  She was gone.  I was devastated.  I had begged God for one more chance.  It didn’t happen.  I am comforted to know she at least was able to see the video we sent her.  But I will always miss her.  She was the rock of our family.
