Judging

DAILY READING

Psalm 69:30-36

FIELD NOTES

I remember back in 2010, I was a worship leader for a small church plant in rural Illinois.  The pastor and I had been approached by some men from a different church in town, known for being extremely legalistic.  They had heard that at our church, we didn’t sit in pews, but around tables.  We allowed people to drink coffee and eat their breakfast during worship.  We also had women speak sometimes.  I think we can be honest and say that was the biggest issue.  One of the things I always wondered was this: Why were they trying to control our worship?  What made them think they had any authority over how we expressed our relationships with God?  But then I’m sure I have done the same thing to someone else.  Why do we do this?  What makes us think we control any aspect of anyone else’s relationship with God?

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • Have you ever felt your relationship with God wasn’t up to par because of something someone said to you?
  • Have you ever judged someone else’s faith as subpar, and what made you do so?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Why is it wrong to judge someone?

PRAYER GUIDE

Lord, may our relationships with each other be filled with the same grace that flows from our relationship with you.  Amen.
