Sabbath

DAILY READING

Luke 13:31-35

The scripture illustrates God as a hen that wants to gather His brood, or His children. God wants to bring us peaceful rest, but instead we turn away. It can be easy to let other things in our lives distract us from God. We are just like baby chicks, always scurrying around and creating noise. Sometimes, we must remind ourselves that this noise is not always essential.

Often, I need noise just to have it, many times I will turn on my TV, but not watch it. The noise is better than the silence. Silence and being quiet just doesn’t come naturally for me and like the baby chicks, I create noise, so I don’t have to be still. Due to the modern-day rhythms of work/school, noise can be mediated through schedules, phones, computers, and people. Days off consist of being at home spatially, but mentally and emotionally at work. Only Sabbath can sustain the human soul. Sabbath is a time that we can set aside in order to be still and listen to God. It teaches us that we do not work to please God, rather we rest because God is already pleased with the work He has accomplished in us.

ACTION FOR THE DAY

Take a walk in your neighborhood, at the park, or even around your backyard. Feel the fresh air and remember that no matter how far we scurry away, God is and will always be in the coop waiting for us. “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
